Top 5 greatest films that did not win best picture

#5 12 Angry Men
This is easily one of my favorite films of all time. I have not seen The Bridge on the River Kwai, but from what I have seen in 1957 12 Angry Men is definitely my favorite. Lee J. Cobb and Henry Fonda give brilliant performances, neither getting their deserved nominations, and just great acting by the entire cast. 12 Angry Men is a unique film that I will forever love.

#4 The Shawshank Redemption
Completely robbed of its deserving best picture title. I like Forrest Gump, but in no way is it as good as The Shawshank Redemption. I love absolutely everything about it, and honestly have a very hard time finding a flaw. People say it does not need to be number 1 on IMDb's top movies list, and while I agree, this is still an all around incredible film. Though I have not actually seen Pulp Fiction all the way through, The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite films of all time.

#3 GoodFellas
In my opinion GoodFellas is Scorsese's finest film, and while many people will disagree with that, being a movie lover it is hard to deny the brilliance of this film. Scorsese perfectly shows the audience the horrors of the mob, and De Niro, Pesci, and Ray Liotta give some of their best performances. GoodFellas is top 10 all time material for me, and one of the greatest films I have personally ever seen.

#2 2001: A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece. This is a top 5 film for me, and it is a shame it did not win best picture, or that it was not even nominated. As everyone knows there is little dialogue, but 2001: A Space Odyssey is pure artwork, with beautiful music as well, along with the greatest opening scene ever in my opinion. Some may find it boring, but this film is my favorite work of science fiction in cinema history.
#1 It's a Wonderful Life
By the far the best Christmas film ever made, by far the best James Stewart film ever made, by far the best 40s film ever made. It's a Wonderful Life is Frank Capra at his finest. It beautifully shows everyone a tale about George Bailey's life, and is just about a story that everyone in this world can relate to in some way. James Stewart's career performance, Capra's best film, and an all around phenomenal movie. Sounds like it deserved best picture, right? It did.

  1. Great post! Man, I totally agree with you on Goodfellas and It's A Wonderful Life! They were both my favorites and they were both robbed! It's a shame!
1994 was hard year for the Oscars. I've been thinking about who should have won that year for a long time already and I still haven't decided yet.

  3. Ah, thank you both! I have not seen Pulp Fiction all the way through, and after I do I may make some changes there. The Shawshank Redemption is just my favorite from what I have seen.

  4. Great list, and by the way, great blog.

I love The Shawshank Redemption and I agree with you that it is better than Forrest Gump, although the former is one of my favorites as well.

  5. Thanks! Forrest Gump just was not a film for me, though I loved Hanks' performance. One of my favorite actors.

  6. 12 Angry men is a great film but I'm afraid The Bridge on the River Kwai is its superior. You are nor going to believe this but I have JUST writen a review on it on my own blog.
Henry Fonda is sublime in 12 Angry Men but I do think that Alec Guiness in Kwai was the right winner of the Oscar that year. You'll have to see it and judge it for yourself.
To put Kwai into perspective against Angry the AFI rate Kwai the 13th best film ever made. angry doesn't even make the top 100! But when you look at the list it is flawd as there are movies listed there that Angry is far superior to.

  7. Yeah, I enjoy AFI's list but sometimes they are wrong. Often really. But I probably would enjoy Kwai more, and just read your review! Thanks so much for reading!
