Films for the week

Hairspray (2007) - Musicals are not films I am particularly familiar with, but this modern musical was surprisingly enjoyable, with good performances all around. 7/10

Princess Mononoke (1997) - One of Hayao Miyazaki's finer films, with unbelievably beautiful animation and an unforgettable story, this is an animated film to remember. 9/10

Castle in the Sky (1986) - It doesn't rank with Miyazaki's best, but Castle in the Sky has an incredible story that is unfortunately underdeveloped. However, with strong performances the film still hits the mark by the end. 8/10

Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - Potentially Hayao Miyazaki's best film, along with the always brilliant Spirited Away. What's to say about this film? It was beautiful, beautifully made, and beautifully told. 10/10

The Wrestler (2008) - One of the best, if not the best, film of the decade. Mickey Rourke was nominated for best actor, and should have won, enough said. 10/10

On Stranger Tides (2011) - The worst film of the already dying Pirates of the Caribbean series. yes, it is unfortunate, but coming from Rob Marshall, we all knew it was going to be bad. 4/10

  1. The Wrestler! I have no idea when I finally can watch it. I really hope I'll love it. Aronofsky is a controversial persona: some films of his I hate, some I like, and one (the last year's) I love. Will see Pirates tomorrow. I hope I'll like it, I heard totally different responses, so there's a chance it'll be good in my opinion. But I agree, Rob Marshall... was not the best choise for this movie.

  3. As much as I absollutely adore Aronofsky I found The Wrestler to be his weakest. The whole film felt laborious and cumbersome to me. But hey, one guy's opinion. I like this post format, btw.

  4. Lesya - You need to! It is the only Aronofsky film I have seen, but I am soon to watch Pi and The Fountain. Rob Marshall seems to have the right idea with his films, but the wrong execution. That's my guess at least.

    Rohit - Glad you agree!

themoviesnob - That is a shame, it was even better the second time around, so try it again if you haven't already.

  5. Pi and The Fountain are the films I didn't like. However, they are worth watching. You definitely need to check out Black Swan! Requiem for a Dream is a solid film.
